Tony Awards, trionfa Billy Elliott
Il musical Billy Elliott, firmato da Elton John (nella foto), ha trionfato ai Tony Awards (gli Oscar teatrali americani) con 10 statuette, tra cui quella per il miglior musical e la miglior colonna sonora. La commedia di Yasmina Reza God of Carnage ha vinto come miglior spettacolo, miglior regia e miglior attrice (Marcia Gay Harden). Geoffrey Rush, premio Oscar per Shine, è il miglior attore protagonista in uno spettacolo (Exit the King di Eugene Ionesco), e Angela Lansbury (La signora in giallo) è la miglior attrice non protagonista in uno spettacolo (Blithe Spirit di Noel Coward).

Angela Lansbury wins fifth TonyJune 7, the Tony Awards was live telecast on CBS from p p.m to 11 p.m. The event was held at the Radio City Music Hall. The event was hosted by CBS network’s “How I Met Your Mother” star Neil Patrick Harris.
Angela Lansbury won her fifth Tony award on Sunday’s Tony Award ceremony. The win came for her part in the play “Blithe Spirit”. The 83 year old actress was nominated in the “BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A PLAY”. The play has the legendary actress enacting the role of a medium Madame Acrati in the revival of Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”.
The Sunday’s win for Lansbury in the featured actress category tied her on a record previously held by Julie Harris for 5 Tony wins. Harris has five wins and an additional one for lifetime achievement that she had received in 2002.
On receiving the award, the actress was greeted with a standing ovation. She told her audience, “Who would have thought, who knew that (at) this time in my life that I should be presented with this lovely, lovely award. I feel deeply grateful.”
Lansbury is widely known in the U.K for her performance in the hit TV series “Murder She Wrote” which ran from 1984 to 1996. She is considered to be a legend on Broadway for musical and theatre roles. Angela Lansbury’s career has spanned over a long period of 7 decades. In this time, she has attained great heights in her acting career and has won numerous honors. Her first movie was 1944 release “Gaslight”. She had featured in Broadway musicals like “Gypsy”, “Sweeney Todd”, “Mame” and more.

Angela Lansbury won her fifth career Tony Award June 7: Best Featured Actress in a Play for Blithe Spirit.
Lansbury's total now ties that of previous record-holder for an actor, Julie Harris.
Harris won all her Tonys in Leading Actress in a Play roles: I Am a Camera (1952), The Lark (1956), Forty Carats (1969), The Last of Mrs. Lincoln (1973) and The Belle of Amherst (1977).
Lansbury won her first four Tonys in the Leading Actress in a Musical categories: Mame (1966), Dear World (1969), Gypsy (1975) and Sweeney Todd (1979). She was nominated as Best Leading Actress in a Play in 2007 for Deuce, but did not win. This 2009 award is her first as Best Featured Actress in a Play.
